The National Assembly of Ecuador is hosting the Legislative Forum “The Family as a Pillar of National Development” on Tuesday, October 14, a meeting that brings together legislators from different political parties and experts in family public policy.
The event, held in Quito, is organized by the Ecuador office of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS Ecuador), the law firm Dignity and Law, and Political Network for Values (PNfV).
“Dialogue is an essential factor in building paths of collaboration so that the family can be recognized as a pillar of development,” said Johannes Hügel, director of KAS Ecuador.
Lola Velarde, executive director of PNfV, recalled that “the Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms in Article 16 that the family is the natural and fundamental group unit of society and is entitled to protection by the State; therefore, its strengthening must be a central issue on the legislative agenda.”
Among the invited experts were Héctor Yépez, director of the School of Government at Espíritu Santo University (UEES); Vajk Farkas, director of the Madrid office of the Center for Fundamental Rights in Hungary; Katherine Herrera, consultant for the Strategic Security and Defense Studies Network of KAS Ecuador; Isabel María Salazar, expert in public policies on childhood and the family environment; and Tomás Henríquez, director of political advocacy for Latin America and the Caribbean at ADF International.
