On the eve of the V Transatlantic Summit to be held at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York, we spoke with Jaime Mayor Oreja, honorary president of Political Network for Values (PNfV), and he explains one of the fundamental characteristics of the summits: “in them, and in our Network, we bring together all those who want to build a future based on permanent values”.
Mayor Oreja, former Minister of the Interior and former member of the European Parliament, is one of the idealizers and founders of PNfV, which saw the light of day in 2014 during the first Transatlantic Summit, also held at the UN headquarters. In that edition, the central theme was the strengthening of the family and important synergies emerged there, including one with Katalin Novák, current president of Hungary and president of our network from 2019 to 2022.
The V Transatlantic Summit takes place on November 16 and 17 and will be attended by 200 political and civic leaders from 48 countries. What is its relevance?
It is relevant because it adds up at a time when many are dividing. We are experiencing the end of a chapter of the West, but it is not the end of the West as a whole. It is a time of difficult transition. Hence, the importance of the Summit and the Network. It is important to bring together all those who believe that the debate of the future will take place between the permanent Christian foundations and relativism.
The New York Summit is taking place in the context of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Is there anything to celebrate?
The 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) ushered in a new era for the West after the end of World War II. The world was broken and the declaration helped unite diverse peoples around the recognition of the dignity of every human being.
Some say that today the UDHR is a dead letter…
Today, progressively, this Declaration is being replaced and destroyed by a list of new and false rights. We must return to the original understanding and to the true rights recognized and enshrined in this document.
The “greater evil” of the World Wars, was replaced by abortion as the “lesser evil”, the first false and new right of the West.
And that first false right brought others…
Evil became present in an unprecedented way, and from that moment, it set in motion a series of developments, including euthanasia, ‘gender,’ transhumanism, and many other manifestations of this new and profound social and moral disorder
Is it a time of crisis?
We are living decadence, that is, crisis, weakness. Hence, if in the external sphere we have two wars simultaneously, one in the heart of Europe, Ukraine, and the other in the Holy Land. Internally, the disorder, country by country, seems to have no limits.
What is the way out?
Reclaiming our soul and the ‘soul’ of the West. The regeneration of Europe and the West requires the recovery of our essence, so that the sense of transcendence is present in our civilization.
The debate of the future requires us to rediscover the foundations, the soul, the meaning of transcendence and for this, we must not hide the perennial values and the faith that drives Christians. Faith is not imposed, but it is not hidden.
